8th Annual - Raise The Roof

10.17.06

The 8th Annual Raise the Roof event will be held on Oct. 21st from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Rosewood & Chestnut Neighborhoods with the Alamo Rec. Center as the headquarters.

Volunteers work in teams. Teams select a home from the Hands On Housing file of applicants based on their team's skills, resources and time availability. A match is made when a homeowner and a team agree upon what repairs will be made. After this agreement is reached, volunteers repair the home during the all day Raise the Roof event. This year, KB Home’s sponsorship is helping to supply needed materials to make repairs and skilled labor to complete the projects.

AST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR 2006
10.4.06

NOVEMBER  18TH &  19TH   10 AM - 5 PM
“E.A.S.T. has become a great way for artists to meet and connect with a large and diverse section of people from our city and beyond.  Artists are commonly quiet members of society, often working alone or in small groups in some environment of their own creation.  In these environments they build, create, observe, destroy, conceptualize, and visualize.  November 18th and 19th is your chance to stroll through these spaces and dialogue with over 100 artists about how and why they do what they do.”

CHESTNUT COMMUTER RAIL STOP ON TRACK

8.20.06

The Commuter Rail program that is part of Capitol Metro’s All Systems Go transit plan is on track to begin service in 2008.  CapMetro owns the rail lines that the commuter rail system will travel on but is now in the process of planning for each commuter rail station. The Red Line is the first of several lines envisioned to traverse through the Austin area. The Red Line will run from Leander to downtown and include nine stations.

Sleek, new trains will take you to work in comfort and style, providing you with high-back seats, bicycle and overhead racks, and Wi-Fi connections. Some seating areas will feature tray tables. Capital MetroRail’s initial service will be during morning and afternoon peak hours. Regular and special shuttle buses will whisk you to your final destination.

The Chestnut neighborhood is fortunate to have one of the nine planned commuter rail stations within its neighborhood.  CapMetro has partnered with the owner of the portion of the Featherlite tract located just south of MLK and to the east of Miriam.  The City of Austin has recently hired a consultant to assist the City, neighborhoods and private interests in planning for each of these nine stations. The planning for the stations is expected to begin this fall. CANA will notify residents and business owners when this planning process begins for the Chestnut commuter rail station.

CapMetro currently owns the train tracks that the commuter railcars will run on, but they still need to purchase the cars yet Cap Metro needs to do several things before they can begin service on this commuter rail line in 2008?
.    Rail vehicle design is underway, and construction of the car shell is expected to begin this fall.
.    Station construction and design begins this fall.
.    Signal system design is underway, and installation is expected to begin by the end of the year.
.    Union Pacific overpass design is underway. The project is expected to go out for bid in late summer.
.    The relocation of tracks on 4th Street in Downtown Austin is in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
Railcar maintenance facility design is underway. Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year and be completed by the end of 2007.
